Since its inception, it has grown to feature research in topical and critical areas, with a broad range of subjects in the humanities and social sciences, with themes such as Reasonable Accommodation, Reciprocity in Theory and Practice, Embodied Religion, Crime and Punishment, the Afterlife, Liminal Spaces, Sexy Religion, and more. It has featured specific papers about Batman films, Satanic religions, the politics of immigration, food preparation, Buddhist shrines, pilgrimage, community identity, death practices, and sexuality. The AGIC showcases excellence in research within a welcoming professional atmosphere. We hope to continue to present innovative and creative work for domestic and international graduates.
You are invited to participate in a one-day arts-based interfaith workshop for young adults from Jewish, Christian, and Muslim, communities. Monday, February 23rd – 9:30 a.m. – 17:00 p.m. Free with lunch and snacks provided (all vegetarian, with Kosher options available) and transportation reimbursement. The Sisters have consistently been at the forefront of AIDS activism, advocacy and service to various LGBTQ communities and have created a global network of queer nuns who work in their local areas for social justice, equality and human rights. This lecture will focus on the ways that the Sisters queer our ideas of religion and spirituality as well as examine how the Sisters’ playful and sexy religious rituals create new meanings of queer politics and queer community. Jason B. Crawford holds a PhD in Humanities from Concordia University in Montreal and currently teaches at Champlain College in Saint-Lambert, Quebec. His research and writing are situated at the crossroads of politics, performance, geography and queer culture. His writing on the drag kings and drag queens of Montreal appeared in Canadian Theatre Review and his research with Karen Herland on the Sex Garage raid and police actions was published in the Journal of Canadian Studies. He has a forthcoming chapter on the Quebec gay film auteur Michel Audy in the book Cinephemera: Moving Images at the Margins of Canadian Cinema History to be published in December.
